Twin Perspectives

When I was a little girl, I remember the last few years of the twin towers being built and the buzz around them being the tallest in the world! I remember looking at them when I took the bus into the city every Saturday for my Martha Graham dance class in my early teens, and into my adult years performing on Broadway. The towers were always a beacon of strength and a symbol of partnership welcoming me to a city of endless opportunities. Seeing them there at the tip of Manhattan was a comfort that offered me hope to fulfill my dreams in one of the greatest cities in the world. My son won't have the same experience I had. Instead he will be offered a different, perhaps more profound, feeling of hope. My son will remember the Freedom Tower being built during his youth, and the many souls that gave their lives and showed heroic actions on such a fateful day. He will grow up seeing its image from the New Jersey transit train as he approaches the city, and will hold in his heart humanity, peace, and love.
